Ida Kleiterp
At first glance one might associate the name Kleiterp ('clay mound' in Dutch) with an artist’s deliberately chosen pseudonym because the name reflects the essence of her sculptures. In keeping with Dutch sculptural tradition, her sculptures literally seem to have been pulled out of clay and emerge from the ground to take a firm stance.
Emma de Vries, Amsterdam, March 2005
Ida Kleiterp was born in Beverwijk in 1948 and lives and works in Amsterdam. She earned a degree at the Sociale Academy, and while employed as a social worker, she particularly enjoyed guiding and mentoring children. Her artistic training began at the Free Academy in The Hague (1977) and the Summer Academy in Niederbipp, Switzerland (1981). After deciding to pursue art as a full-time career, she studied sculpture at the Rijksakademie van Beeldenden Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam from 1983 to 1986. During that period she won the Uriot prize two times. Since 1986 she has annually exhibited her work at various locations in the Netherlands and abroad. Ida Kleiterp's sculptures can be found in the Jewish Historical Museum collection in Amsterdam, and private collections throughout the Netherlands and in Spain, Italy, Greece, Cuba, and
